The database catalogue of the Lord Coutanche Library has recently been upgraded to a new and improved software platform, which is in the process of being updated by our staff. As a result, some records that appear in searches conducted through this page may include errors or omissions due to discrepancies in the old system. If you require further information on a particular author or publication in the Société Jersiaise Library, please contact us.

User Instructions

Selecting the list icon beside the search fields will reveal a list of terms that occur in records. These terms may be dragged across into search fields using the left pointing arrow for inclusion in searches. Terms with a plus symbol before them may be expanded to reveal narrower terms and selecting the minus symbol will cause them to implode again. By first entering the first letter(s) of a term before selecting the list icon you can jump alphabetically to the relevant area on the list to save time browsing the list.

Click on the Field Name to reveal further instructions on entering search terms for the particular search field.

Results are sorted into Title order by default though may be sorted by Author or Year by selecting the appropriate Sort by radio button. The Records per page control defines the number of records displayed on each page of the search results.

The Douglas Hooke Box Files

The Douglas Hooke box files are a collection of over 200 boxes of ephemera held in the Lord Coutanche Library at the Société Jersiaise. These items were indexed and classified by volunteer Douglas Hooke and many others. It was decided to place this information on the website with a view to providing more information not available in the library catalogue. This is a diverse collection containing many different types of material, including manuscripts, newspaper cuttings and documents, which probably numbers over 20,000 different items. The material relates to family history and Privateering to name but a few subjects. It is hoped this will work as a supplementary catalogue until such time as actual cataloguing can be done. Any feedback as to how this service could be improved would be welcome.

The indexes list the material available in each box file and are divided into different categories according to subject matter. Each index is provided in the Microsoft Word document format for ease of reference, which can be viewed using either Word Viewer 2003 or OpenOffice if you do not have access to Microsoft Word.
